One of our go to, favorite sensory bin fillers is colored rice. If you have never dyed rice before you are in luck! It couldn’t be easier. We pull our rice bin out at least once a week for some fun! I will post soon about all the different ways we use our rice sensory bin. Check out how I dyed our rice below!
Supplies
• Rice ( I used 2 cup per color = 8 cups total )
• Food Coloring ( I used 4 colors )
• Rubbing Alcohol ( 2 tsp per color = 8 tsp total )
• Ziplock bags ( 1 per color )
• Essential oil ( optional for a fresh scent )
Steps
• Filled bags with rice.
I poured the rice into a large bowl so I could have Lucy assist in scooping the rice and putting it into the bags.
• Pour 2 tsp of rubbing alcohol into each bag.
• Follow rubbing alcohol with about 25 drops of desired food coloring.
• OPTIONAL: Add 2-4 drops of the essential oil of your choice. We picked lemon.
• Zip bag closed and “smush” bag around until rice is coated.
This was another fun opportunity to have Lucy get involved.
• Pour rice onto a paper towel to dry. I placed ours in a baking dish to keep it from spilling everywhere and this worked very well.
• Let dry overnight.
• Play!
